Many clients want their website to match an existing identity package: logo, colors, typefaces, overall vibe. But if you don’t have an unlimited budget, true customization is hard to come by. My speciality has become customizing WordPress themes, which enables the client to take over managing the site, gives them enough control over the vibe and visuals to feel unique to them, and does it all on a reasonable budget.
An excellent example of this is the site for Heather Brandt Homes, located in Longmont, Colorado. Under the art direction of Beth Ricciardi of boo-creative, I originally built an HTML web site to exact specifications. Recently her assistant reached out to get some basic edits and it seemed silly for them to have to pay me to produce text edits they could do themselves. With the explosion of lovely WordPress themes and the ease of maintaining a WP site, they agreed to rebuild her site on a WordPress platform. Of course the tough part was making it look the same, Heather always loved the original design. So I hunted for a theme that came close and then customized it to retain Heather’s warm, welcoming signature look.
